ABACUS MATHS SOROBAN ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Abacus Maths Soroban Association of South Africa (AMSASA) is a registered Non-Profit Organisation which was started in January 2015.  AMSASA opened up the opportunity for various South African companies, which teach the Japanese Abacus Maths System, to come together to compete in National Championships, and also to provide the opportunity for young South African children to be selected to compete in the international arena.  As an approved member of GAJSMA (Global Association of Japanese Soroban and Mental Arithmetic), all AMSASA Members are able to compete internationally.

AIAMA Online Mental Maths Olympiad – 2020

AMSASA members, Abacus Maths, Abagility Maths Club and Smartbrain participated in the AIAMA Online Mental Maths Olympiad which took place on 20 December 2020 at 04h00 South Africa Time.  We had 42 students who took part in this exciting event.  The Competition was being hosted in Taiwan so the time difference was a fun challenge for us South Africans! There were 20 countries participating and a total of 405 contestants. It was a very exciting event and despite a few technical hitches and our first online championship, it all went very well.  Our children practiced daily for a few months and we are all so proud of their dedication and commitment! Each child “wrote” 3 exams with 20 sums per exam and with only a time limit of 1 minute per exam!  There were seven different competency levels/age groups to compete in and we had children competing in each level.  Our children performed like superstars and our amazing South African students took home the following awards! 1 x GBC (Top student in level), 3 x Golds, 12 x Silvers, 26 x Bronzes.  We are so proud of them all.
